The Vet's 2019 season finally got underway this morning after Wednesday evening's Dale Lowe Signs Summer Series was called off.
A hot northerly made for a tough day for the 27 riders tackling the Woodstock hotdog circuit in reverse for the first time in living memory, battling cross winds pretty much the whole way. The strong scratch bunch had taken a big chunk of time out of second scratch even at the first turnaround at Maryborough Road, who in turn caught the six and nine minute bunches after just 20 km. Up ahead the 13 min group worked the best and still had three together on the run back to Woodstock, whereas Andrea Wilson set off solo. The combined three, six and nine minute bunch disintegrated at the Newbridge turn and were mopped up by scratch soon after with only a couple managing to jump on. They overtook the gallant 13 min bunch inside the last five km and powered to the finishing line. Andy Bos led out the sprint, won by Mathew Grealy (scr) to cap off a fine ride, as well as recording fastest time of 53 min 44 sec at 40.1 km/hr. Brad Geyer (scr.) Stuart Laing (scr), Dale Lowe (3 min) and Andy Bos (scr.) rounded out the top five, followed home a little while later by Darren McKellar (scr.), Murray Rankin (3 min), Aileen O'Brien (13 min), Terry O'Brien (13 min) and Wendy Bennett (13 min.)
