Our illustrious President Brett Williams put his money where his mouth is and sponsored the prestigious President's Handicap at Newbridge today.
Clearly there were many riders keen to dip into Brett's pockets. 29 riders fronted up for the 52 km circuit through Tarnagulla and Dunolly then back to Newbridge via Eddington and Laanecoorie. The two limit markers had a big start and even though they were being chased by much larger bunches, still held a good lead after surviving the early hills. The 16 and 20 minute bunches came together before Dunolly and they combined well until the 13s joined them near Laanecoorie Weir. Second and third scratch also got together about the same time, leaving scratch to chase over the last 15 km with not much help. The two limit riders finally succumbed to the weight of numbers with about five kilometers to go, leaving what remained of the 13,16 and 20 minute bunches to fight out the finish with scratch, second and third still a ways back. The sprint turned in to a non event as Peter Body (16 min) chased down John Weir and Tony Coombes after they took off a fair way out and rode away to win comfortably from Gary Ford (13 min). John Weir (13 min) finished strongly to run third ahead of tenacious Ken Lacy (20 min), Tony Coombes (13 min), David Hare (16 min), Wendy Bennett (16 min), Greg Chapman (16 min) and Andrew Berry (13 min). Noel Hughes (5 min) ran 10th, finishing about a minute ahead of Brad Geyer who recorded fastest time.of 1 hr 15 min 06 sec. The Pres presented Peter with the President's Trophy and also awarded the newly minted "Washateria Award"(courtesy of Tom de Vries) for the gutsy ride of the day to Brian Oliver.
