Today’s racing was criteriums held at the brick works circuit. 25 riders arrived at the starting line with the handicapper dividing the field into 4 grades.
D grade started the proceeding and with such a quality field, riders such as Steve Auld and David Hare were forced into lining up in D grade for the first time in many many years. Michelle Francis got a small start and looked like she might stay away with 3 laps to go however some solids attacks from David Hare and Di Jane closed the gap, meanwhile in the final lap Steve Auld had the kick to pull away from Di Jane and fast finishing Lindsay Williams coming a close 3rd.
C Grade was also a super strong field and the pace was on from the get go! Brad Steigenberger made the big move early and was looking strong, Sydney Anstee then attacked and bridged across to Steigenberger and they were working well together. The Bunch saw this as a real threat with Neil Andrews, Paul Dynon and Tom de Vries starting put the foot down in the chase. With the 2 escape artists finally reeled in Neil Andrews showed a clean pair of heals to a fast finishing Tom DeVries and Paul Dynon taking 3rd.
The B Grade field was a cracker and the attacks started from the gun, Darren McKellar, Darren Jones & Murray Rankin went out of their way early to put the field into difficulty early, with Ian Stringer and Chris Wendy Draper finding the pace to hot half way through the 30min affair! Going up the hill with 5 laps to go Rankin and Jones locked wheels a hit the deck hard, with Robert Gartside being a true gentleman and offering assistance costing him a chance of the win. In the sprint it was Mark Buckell having his first Saturday race this year hit the front winning in front of Richard Mcintosh (race caller) showing some improved form into 2nd and Darren McKellar taking a solid 3rd place.
Small but spirited was the A grade field. It was always going to be a battle of the fastest, Brendan Schultz put in some blistering turns of speed down the finishing straight reaching speeds in excess of 60kph, Brad Geyer was found wanting after such blistering turn getting back to the bunch and then getting away for 3 laps. However this was his undoing after Schultz attacked again. As they swung into the finishing straight Martin Banfield showed good sprinting form to win ahead of Brent Gibson and Schultz taking 3rd.
Next weekend we have the Colwell 2 day aggregate event! harcourt on Saturday and Emu Creek on Sunday.
