The Three Amigos of Maryborough - David Hare (David Hare Optometrists), Ross McDonald (Junction Motel) and Shane Dellavedova (grows the grapes but doesn't make the wine or drink it) sponsored today's 50 Km handicap around the classic Timor Rd circuit.
The weather was unseasonably warm with a light tail wind assisting riders on the return leg, and the good conditions made it tough for the small scratch bunch chasing six bunches with up to 30 minutes start. Second scratch were the early movers, catching the six minute group after 20 km but they in turn were were overhauled by scratch after the left turn off the Rathscar- Dunolly Road. None of the bunches ahead of them even looked like coming together. Jim Field and Di Jane drove towards the finish line with just Aileen and Terry O'Brien chasing from the second limit, the nine and 12 minute bunches having blown apart. Jim (30 min) and Di (30 min) had time to savour their well-deserved win as they cruised to the finish line to take first and second respectively. Things were a bit more frantic behind them after Leigh Wallace (scratch) jumped away from the pursuers in the last few kilometers. He picked up and dropped some stragglers along the way and capped off a great ride to run third and record fastest time in front of Brent Gibson (scr.), Brad Geyer (scr.), Ian Stringer (3 min), Paul Dynon (6 min), Geoff Bennett (3 min), Terry O'Brien (18 min) and Shane Dellavedova (12 min). Six out of the seven bunches were represented in the placings - a tribute to the handicapping.
