Numbers were down a bit today at Laanecoorie for graded scratch races despite the perfect conditions.
We welcomed two try riders, Ben Johnson and Amber Johnson who bolstered the numbers in B Grade and acquitted themselves admirably. The A Grade field was particularly small with a few riders at the country championships, and those who fronted up decided to play nicely, the only attacks of the day coming in the last few kilometers. Leigh Wallace and Brad Geyer had done most of the work and fittingly fought out the finish, with Brad prevailing over Leigh and Geoff Bennett coming in third. Peter Ladd had a dig off the front in B Grade as was to be expected, then Shane Thompson and Andrew Berry both tried their hand before being reeled in by the bunch. Those two had recovered in time to contest the sprint, won by Andrew from Shane with Gino Abbisogni coming in third. C Grade was the race and ride of the day. Wendy Bennett jumped away on the first lap and was joined on the last lap by Tom de Vries who finally escaped the bunch after several attempts. These two managed to fight off the rest of the field with Wendy winning from Tom, and Cheryle Barker leading the rest of the field home just 50 meters behind. The D Grade field was split at the first corner when a couple lost contact after a frantic start. The rest stayed together the whole journey and after Andrea Wilson led out, Ken Lacey proved too strong in the sprint, winning narrowly from Di Jane and Ross Ogilvie.
