Geoff Bennett Fitness sponsored today's race at Emu Creek and a full complement of Bennetts was in attendance.
Mixing it up this week, the handicapper opted for big bunches and big gaps for the tough 51 km double-lap of the Emu Creek circuit. The strong south-westerly and rolling hills in the early part of the lap did a lot of damage as virtually every bunch lost riders, and nearly every bunch was red-flagged at least once due to heavy traffic on the Sedgwick Road. . Andrea Wilson had a bit of excitement when she lost her Garmin coming down the Gooseneck in excess of 70 km/hr but it was fortunately recovered later in working condition. The second lap was the crucible in which many hopes were fried. Scratch flew past second on Axe Creek Road with only Darren McKellar getting on, and the other bunches were picked off one by one in the last ten kilometres. Michelle Francis rode a gallant race to be the last to hold out, but scratch lined up for the sprint with just Darren and Peter Body in tow. In a fitting return on effort, the scratch bunch filled the first five places as Brent Gibson edged out Brad Geyer on the line to take the win and fastest time, followed by David Bakes in his comeback ride, Jo Stolz and Stuart Laing. Darren McKellar (5 min) finished just behind in 6th with Peter Body (14 min) holding on tenaciously in 7th. Second scratch kept working but weren't in the hunt, Murray Rankin (5 min) finishing just ahead of Geoff Bennett (5 min) and Pam Robertson (14 min) filling tenth place
