The Colwell cup has been run and won for the 25th year.
33 starters lined up for the 32km handicap at Emu Creek for the 2 day classic. With many fresh faces the handicapper had a tough day getting the bunches together and in the end divided the field into 8 buches. With a strong scratch bunch containing the added strength of Darren Lapthorne, the money was on for a scratch win. Gaps to the front were 1:30min, 4min, 8min, 12min, 19min, 21min and 30min.
The 21 min bunch of Andrea Wilson and Aileen O'Brien set a cracking pace after some serious coaching from the diesel yesterday, rounding up the Limit duo of Francis and Tilling by the half way mark and were holding there own against the stronger 19min bunch who were struggling to make ground. By the telephone exchange the 12min bunch started to implode whilst the 8min bunch were being hauled in by the 4min group lead by yesterday’s winners Jones, Byrne and Darren McKellar with the 1:30min group hot on there heals and scratch bunch still chasing 30seconds.
In the end Andrea Wilson held off O’Brien in the sprint, Peter Ladd lead the next bunch in for 3rd ahead of Andrew Berry, Di Jane sprinted to 5th ahead of Gary Johnstone, Lindsay Williams and Steve Auld, Michelle Francis was 9th with Ray Colwell in 10th after a DNF yesterday.
Fastest time went to Martin Banfield.
The overall winner of the Colwell Cup is Aileen O'Brien 14 points
