The 2018/19 Dale Lowe Signs Summer Series wrapped up this morning with a big field of 37 riders lining up at Emu Creek in perfect conditions.
Going into the race Ian Stringer, Brent Gibson and Greg Chapman were leading the men's aggregate and Cheryle Barker and Aileen O'Brien were fighting out the women's. Brent's no-show due to a commitment at the State criterium championships left the door wide open for Ian and Greg. Ian paid the price for his win on Wednesday and set off with second scratch just two minutes in front of a small but strong scratch bunch. They were rounded up before the half-way mark with third scratch gathered in on Axe Creek Road. Greg's seven minute bunch caught the 10s further up Axe Creek Road but couldn't make much of an impression on the 13s. The 16s, 22s and lone limit marker Michelle Francis were all riding incredibly well and still led with not much more than a kilometer to go until the final hill hit them and the 13s finally got across. The small bunch sprint fell right into the hands of track specialist Peter Body (13 min) who won from Wendy Bennett (13 min), Aileen O'Brien (16 min) and Carl Louchard (13 min). Andrea Wilson capped off a great ride to finish 5th in front of Di Jane (22 min), David Colwell (16 min), Steven Bright (22 min) and Gary Johnstone (16 min). The depleted scratch group roared home just a few seconds later after leaving a trail of shattered riders behind stretching all the way back to the turnaround and beyond, Jo Stolz finishing 10th and taking fastest time of 47 min 52 sec at 41.8 km/hr. With neither Greg or Ian running a place today, Ian Stringer took out the men's aggregate with 39 points ahead of Brent Gibson on 37, while in the women's, Aileen O'Brien's 3rd place gave her enough points to tie with Cheryle Barker on 24 points and win the aggregate on countback. Thanks to Dale Lowe and all the other sponsors for supporting the series, and to the officials - especially Ricky Lovell - for making it happen.
