Another big field for tonight's Dale Lowe Signs Summer Series handicap at Emu Creek.
Scratch looked pretty awesome but the other bunches also had a lot of depth, and at the turnaround the gaps had closed but the only bunches that had come together were the 17s and 22s. Try riders Tony Hope and James Rowe had a baptism of fire in the 11 and eight minute bunches, both of which charged into the head wind on the return leg, with Mick Laveryplaying the team game by waiting for a flagging compatriot, to no avail. The rest of the 11s worked beautifully and rounded up the 17s at the bottom of the exchange to lead the race. Peter Ladd drove the bunch in the run home, dashing the hopes of the 8s who closed to within 30 metres at one stage but couldn't bridge across. Scratch picked up second at the top of Exchange Hill and looked like pulling off an unlikely victory, but the 11s wouldn't give in and held them off, with Greg Chapman (11 min) taking a brave victory in front of the omnipresent Cheryle Barker (11 min) Peter Ladd (11 min), and Gino Abbisogni (11 min). Martin Banfield stormed home to take 5th and fastest just a few meters behind the leaders and ahead of Jo Stolz (scr.) in a handicapping tour de force.
