There was a lot riding (no pun intended) on tonight's Dale Lowe Signs Summer Series handicap at Emu Creek.
Eight out of the ten riders leading the aggregate were on the start line, and most were within striking distance of the lead with two races to go. It was fairly breezy but otherwise a great evening for racing. The three front bunches were small in number but big in heart and at the turnaround Steve Bright and Michelle Francis still held a good lead over the chasers. That's about when the head wind started to bite. Second scratch rapidly overhauled the five minute bunch with David Hogan, Phil Bone, Chris Landvogt and Darren McKellar driving hard to stay away from scratch who were suffering from lack of numbers. The rest of the field was mopped up on the exchange hill or shortly after, and a bunch of about a dozen charged to the finish. David Hogan tried to get away on the last small hill before the Emu Creek Road intersection but he was dragged back. Positioning on the last corner is critical and Ian Stringer (5 min) played it perfectly to come off the right wheels and win the sprint convincingly from Darren McKellar (3 min), Chris Landvogt (3 min), Phil Bone (3 min), Murray Rankin (3 min) and David Cripps (5 min). Brent Gibson led the scratch bunch home about a minute later to record fastest time of 49 min 39 sec at 40.3 km/hr.
