Some of the A Graders in tonight's Cantina Graded Scratch Race are thinking about lodging a protest against Damo Hughes for unfair advantage.
Damo had signed up a sizeable cheer squad at the finish line and had the effrontery to celebrate on the way out as well as at the finish. After Leigh Wallace and Hudson Crothers tried early unsuccessful breaks, and Peta Mullens, Leigh and Damo trying again after the turnaround, a red flag brought the field back together before Damo jumped again on the last hill to take the win in front of his incredibly biased cheer squad ahead of Peta and Hudson Crothers. B Grade was a much more equitable race - not a cheer squad in sight. A large and very even field meant that none of the several attempts to break away succeeded. Ian Stringer took the bull by the horns on the last hill and put in a huge attack. Only Paul Dalton was able to drag him back with a powerful sprint. Gavin Hill came in third. C Grade was an equally even affair except for Stuart Laing who took off on Exchange Hill and held off the field to record a great win from Andrew Berry and Robert Gibson. E Grade was run at a frenetic pace which took its toll with Carl Louchard, Gary Johnstone and Pam Robertson all pulling big turns. Gary Leech had the most left in the tank at the finish to win from Pam Robertson and Gary Johnstone. The Cantina Twilight Series is proving to be hugely popular with nearly 40 riders turning up tonight, so the last two races should be rippers.
