Today's club race - a handicap around the tough 50 km loop from Woodstock to Newbridge, Laanecoorie, along the Maryborough Road to Shellbourne then back home - was made even harder by a strong northerly which always seemed to be a cross-head wind.
Thirty riders were spread over eight small bunches including just two in scratch who conceded up to 30 minute starts. The 11 minute bunch proved to be the best in the wind as all five hung together and overhauled all the bunches in front while holding off the 16 minute riders who were also combining well. Behind them, none of the other bunches came together until the last couple of kilometres, by which time the leaders were across the finish line. Leigh-Anne Dynon (20 min) blitzed the small bunch sprint to win comfortably from Ray Colwell (16 min), Steve Auld (16 min), Nicky Rose (16 min), Ken Lacey (20 min) and Mike McCartney (16 min). They finished well in front of the 11 minute bunch with Ross McDonald leading them home in seventh place, followed by Greg Chapman, Pam Robertson and David Hare. Martin Banfield narrowly held off fellow scratch marker Hudson Crothers to record fastest time a couple of minutes later.
