A beautiful spring day was in order for the Central Vic Vets 35km handicap race at Woodstock on Loddon this afternoon.
Whilst 26 Riders registered for the days event, the Handicappers were left scratching their heads without any true scratchmen entering.
The handicappers divided the field into 6 groups with a well seasoned scaratch bunch lead by John Weir, Murray Rankin and Andrew Berry chasing bunches of 2m, 5m, 7m, 16m and 22mins.
The combined efforts of 16m bunch lead by Di Jane and Ken Lacey coupled up with the 22m group of Michelle Francis and Ross Ogilvie by Newbridge and were working well together. Meanwhile the 5m group lead by former club champ Gino Abbisogni had his group powering along and soon caught the 7min group providing the numbers that would be required to hold off the fast finishing back men. With 5km to go the combined 5,7&16min bunch had the race to themselves with the 2min group unable to catch the combined group, however they were working well enough to keep the scratch bunch at bay.
The sprint to the line saw Abbisogni take his first win after a long absence, whilst Chris Draper in his first ride back after a 6 month lay off sprinted into 2nd, followed by David Hare 3rd, Nicky Rose 4th, Greg Chapman 5th. 6th was our Northern vets visitor Michael Hartman, 7th Jennifer Farrow, 8th Ken Lacey, 9th Tom de Vries and in 10th place was Di Jane. John Weir showed the scratch bunch a clean pair of heels in the sprint to take Fastest Time.
